about

Scorpion Cache is the debut release from SPF666, co-head of the newly-minted Club Chemtrail Records. An energetic offering of percussive interpretations of UK grime, ballroom, and dembow, the 3 original tracks + remixes fit nicely in the vein of drum-driven dance music that is currently infecting dancefloors across the globe. Describing the ep as “Chemtrail Club,” SPF presents challenges of dissonance and negative space within his stripped down, dancefloor-ready tunes-- this is truly music for clubs where fog machines pump a suspicious haze over a stark, jagged environment, while faceless dancers aggressively twirl and duckwalk in the murk. Already garnering support from members of Fade to Mind, Night Slugs, Pelican Fly, Hyperdub, and more, we’re excited to present Scorpion Cache as our flagship release.

The title track builds on a lurching dembow with a tight rolling break, the frenetic rhythm sprints towards the satisfaction of massive, stomping half-time grime drops. “Tsundere” is another hybrid grime tune, with nods to vogue throughout. Aiming to explore the concept of Ma (間), or negative space, SPF arranges traditional percussive samples in syncopations inspired by Gagaku court music resulting in an energetic, clanging beast. The third and final original on the release, “Don’t Laugh, Bxtch” is a crowd-pleasing blend of Jersey club and ballroom that gives way to an energetic play of sound and silence, as shouts, over- saturated 808s, and crashes invite dancers to high kick and death drop in a manner somewhere between voguing and fighting. Mike G’s remix of Scorpion Cache needs little introduction. Already featured in the sets of tastemakers the world over, this new-grime monster destroys dancefloors with a dynamic rework of the original’s heavy bass into a staggeringly powerful banger that lives up to its hype. Label co-owner Commune brings a welcome touch of melody in his sleek remix of the title track. Laying a hollow pad, half-grime and half-kwaito in origin, over thudding kicks, Commune’s mix could easily find a home in almost any dj’s crate. Rounding out the release, Club Chemtrail party collaborator and Fade to Mind duppy Massacooramaan breaks apart Tsundere’s cadences and commands the drums into a head-on percussive assault. Luo gongs crash over violent onslaughts of machine gun kicks, while hand drums and drill squeals weave a complex pattern, this mix treads the line of dj tool and riddim track, making it immensely versatile.
